Background:
Recent disruptions, including the COVID-19 pandemic, have exposed vulnerabilities in the EU pharmaceutical supply chain, highlighting the need to adopt a coordinated approach. The Critical Medicines Act aims to enhance patient access to affordable medicines, support industrial competitiveness, and reinforce European strategic autonomy in healthcare.
This EESC mandatory referral opinion will propose actions and recommendations towards the definition of the Critical Medicines Act. The legislations is set to be a crucial step in strengthening the EU’s resilience against medicine shortages. Ensuring a stable and secure supply of essential medicines is vital to protecting public health, preventing crises in healthcare systems, and reducing the EU’s external dependence for important medicines and components.
